Review For It's a Disaster

There's something about It's a Disaster that's ripe with potential, but a slack atmosphere populated with overeager actors grows tiring, lessening interest in their ultimate fate.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

A pitch-perfect black comedy, catching just the right tone of people blowing small things out of proportion when a really big thing, like Armageddon, is happening.
Kirk Honeycutt-honeycuttshollywood.com

Like its opening shot - an image of a beach where we gradually pull back to reveal an atomic bomb test - this is fun that turns destructive.

Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) works for The Lucas Clinic -- a company that reaps a tidy profit by infecting willing clients with viruses taken from their favorite celebrities. Earning a little extra cash on the side by using his own body to smuggle out popular microbes, Syd finds himself in mortal danger after he infects himself with a pathogen taken from Hannah Geist -- a gorgeous superstar who later dies as a result of her illness. Now, it's only a matter of time before Syd succumbs to a similarly gruesome fate. When Syd's shady clients and a rival company discover he's carrying a bug that could revolutionize the industry, he must fight back with the only weapon he has -- his own virulent blood. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi. Review For Antiviral

'Antiviral' never wholly succeeds as either a surgical satire or a medical conspiracy thriller, and its tedious last third is like a diseased body dragging itself slowly to the grave.
Nigel Floyd-Time Out

A virtual panoply of high wooziness, replete with sweating, shakes, vomiting, rot-infected food and more needles piercing skin than rush hour at a free flu clinic.
Geoff Pevere-Globe and Mail

Obviously influenced by his dad David's early work but also showing a strong personal style, Brandon Cronenberg's feature debut is a body-horror satire with a point - a needle point.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

Although the climax feels like one last stab by Brandon to echo his father's legacy, the rest of the film suggests the promise of his own distinct, distressing career to come.
William Goss-Film.com

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, David Cronenberg should be feeling pretty chuffed with son Brandon's big-screen debut, a petri dish of high-concept perversity and cultural commentary teeming with lo-fi ickiness.
Megan Lehmann-Hollywood Reporter

Cronenberg's use of his Toronto setting is a clever exercise in making the minimal look futuristic, with its cold white surfaces - like Landry Jones' own waify presence - an effective canvas for a plot that grows increasingly bloody.
Andrew Simpson-Fan The Fire

... a truly striking and unforgettable instant classic.
Staci Layne Wilson-Yahoo! Movies

Like his father before him, Brandon makes a virtue of budgetary restraints: Antiviral's rough textures are, in themselves, somewhat alienating.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

A very accomplished film, especially for a debut.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

For fans of Cronenberg Sr, Antiviral pushes plenty of pleasurable buttons. Indeed, Brandon is so on-brand, the film so archly Cronenbergian, that at times it approaches parody.
Ian Berriman-SFX Magazine

[A] twisted, creepy extrapolation of our obsession with celebrity... [O]ne of the more disturbing and more unsettling films I've seen in a quite a while... and also one of the cleverest examples of science fiction cinema in years...
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

An intriguing and fairly stylish mix of sci-fi, horror and detective movie tropes that suggest Cronenberg might soon step out from his father's shadow.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

This dark fable is a subversive stomach-churner and not for the faint-hearted.
Alan Jones-Radio Times

Clearly about the curse of celebrity culture but also hamfisted and confused. If you like nasties, this is very nasty indeed.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

Intriguing but laboured, mannered and a little dull.
-Daily Express

Growing gradually sicker and messier along with its conflicted protagonist, Antiviral is, in all its icily unpleasant ickiness, indeed perfect somehow.
Anton Bitel-Sight and Sound

It may be style over substance, but Brandon Cronenberg cleverly blends his father David's love of medical yuckiness with an elusive Lynchian-style mystery to keep us unnerved all the way through this low-key thriller.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

For all its "yeugh" content, Antiviral is patchily enthralling.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Proof that there's room for more than one brainy provocateur in the Cronenberg gene-pool.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

If David Cronenberg's entire body of work didn't exist, Antiviral would be a revelation. As it stands...
David Jenkins-Little White Lies

Queasiness abound but there are no real jolts; the words "foreskin", "anus" and "vulva" are unlikely to disturb anyone under the age of 97.
Elliott Noble-Sky Movies

A smart, subversive but rather cold debut from Brandon Cronenberg that's short of the dark wit that lit up his father's early work.
Kim Newman-Empire Magazine

Antiviral is an accomplished piece of work ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The film sags a little in its final third, and all the white-on-white interiors get a bit wearing for the eyes; but this chip off the old block has a strong talent behind it and much to recommend it.
Hannah McGill-The List

Andrew Stern's overworked but oddly nonspecific script needs to be a lot savvier about contempo media culture to bear the didactic weight of its themes.

Watch The Angels' Share

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film festival, legendary director Ken Loach , one of Britain's most distinguished and respected filmmakers, who makes tough, uncompromising films about a beleaguered working class with poetry and humor, and longtime writing partner Paul Laverty (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Bread and Roses and My Name is Joe), present an engagingly off-kilter new film, The Angels' Share. Robbie, a young ne'er do well (Paul Brannigan), a broke new father with a good heart is in serious trouble with the law. When he holds his newborn son for the first time, roguish Robbie is determined that the boy will have a better life, one with more opportunities than he has been offered in this insular, blue collar world. But first Robbie must sort out a variety of pressing problems --his girlfriend's family wants to do him harm and run him out of town being first and foremost among them. He is given a lucky break by a judge who shows mercy, granting him community service instead of jail. Here he meets Rhino, Albert and Mo, former petty criminals also down on their luck. Review For The Angels' Share

Loach's realism always carries a distinct sense of humor, volatility and, most alarmingly in this hypercapitalist new century, a socialist passion for The People.
Steven Boone-Chicago Sun-Times

An amiable comedy about young Glaswegian roughnecks discovering the world of whisky, "The Angels' Share" finds helmer Ken Loach and long-term screenwriting partner Paul Laverty in better, breezier form than their rebarbative prior effort,
Leslie Felperin-Variety

Loach and Laverty never fully resolve the yin and yang: the blood and the banter. But it's still rewarding to see these filmmakers exploring a different ton.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

There is love, laughter and whisky galore in Ken Loach's unusually joyful comedy drama about delinquent Scottish youths defying the odds society has stacked against them.
Stephen Dalton-Hollywood Reporter

Although some of the accents are so thick it's difficult to understand the dialogue (where are the subtitles when we need them?) the performances feel genuine.
Grant Butler-Oregonian

This is as close to a feel-good film as [director] Ken Loach gets, yet he never loses sight or touch with the reality he is so brilliant at capturing on camera.
Jim Schembri-3AW

The Angels' Share is the charming story of four Scottish criminals who find redemption - if not exactly rehabilitation - through alcohol. It may not seem like the typical logline for a heart-warmer; it seems about right for a Ken Loach flick.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

Loach brings a warm-hearted poignancy to this feel-good tale of the more disadvantaged in society who, miraculously, find redemption.
Ed Gibbs-The Sun Herald

I loved this. I walked out of this film just really filled with delight. Ken Loach is such a socially conscious filmmaker.
Margaret Pomeranz-At the Movies (Australia)

The film has a rough and ready look, but the charm of its battler characters shines through and there's plenty to relish here, even though the plot gets more and more improbable the further it proceeds.
David Stratton-At the Movies (Australia)

[Loach's] latest collaboration with screenwriter Paul Laverty proves the pair can pull off a genre entertainment with aplomb when in the mood.
Jake Wilson-The Age (Australia)

Ken Loach does hope' could be the headline a Fleet Street sub might slap on a review of The Angels' Share, in which a young Scot accidentally finds salvation and a way out of his trapped life of crime and misery
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

The spirit and the flesh are willing in this mischievous, bittersweet comedy in which single malt whisky, an ex crim and second chances come together in an interesting blend
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

Finds room for some well-earned warm fuzzies.
Tony Stamp-Flicks.co.nz

If I had to make a comparison, I'd say it is an unlikely pairing of Green Street Hooligans and Sideways.
Adam Ross-The Aristocrat

The redemptive path is paved with laughter and charm, mixes mirth with tears beautifully
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

It has a spellbinding heft of charm, carrying itself just like a fine whiskey - warm, a little sweet, and unequivocally a joy to return to time and time again.
Shaun Munro-What Culture

There is politics underlying every aspect of this funny, warm-hearted, deftly plotted film, and we fervently wish for the caper planned by this endearing quartet to succeed.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The feel-good comedy of the summer. Who knew?
Tara Brady-Irish Times

Brannigan is an engaging lead and Henshaw offers light relief, but director Ken Loach, famous for his social realism, and regular writer Paul Laverty struggle to find a balance between the film's comic and serious elements.
Damon Wise-Radio Times

A wee heart-warming dram of Scots spirit ... a rich fermentation of the best of British comedy filmmaking with a greater social agenda.
Lisa Giles-Keddie-Real.com

A whimsical crime caper comedy in the Ealing vein about a bunch of delinquent Glaswegians who pull off a very unlikely heist - think Whisky Galore with sweary Neds instead of twinkling Hebridean islanders.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

It is an uplifting tale of redemption with a hint of politics, which is not overstated.

Review For To The Wonder

There's a phoniness to the film's people and places that keeps us at a fatal distance from the big ideas with which 'To the Wonder' seeks to engage us.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

There's nothing to "get." There really isn't. It's a story about a troubled relationship that, for me, ultimately chokes on its own self-conscious flourishes.
Linda Holmes-NPR

I recommend it for anyone who'll get a buzz out of hearing a line like "what is this love that loves us?" spoken in French.
Jordan Hoffman-Film.com

A ramble through the ecstasies of the natural world as experienced or ignored by little people on a giant, gorgeous planet.
Richard Corliss-TIME Magazine

However accomplished Malick's technique might be in some ways, this mostly comes off, especially in the laborious second hour, as visual doodling without focused thematic goals.
Todd McCarthy-Hollywood Reporter

A ravishing visual poem about uncertainty in love and faith, and an insightful portrait of a flame between two incompatible people igniting, dimming, and flickering out.
Jon Frosch-France24

It's a wonder that To The Wonder ever found a release. Terrence Malick's long, lugubrious film is a prolonged exercise in directorial self-pleasuring.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

To the Wonder displays all the familiar Malick touches - fragmentary narrative, impressionistic visuals, poetic voiceover - but this time the Malick magic is missing... Kurylenko is left to waft around dreamily like a model in a Boden catalogue shoot.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

Will Malick ever tire of his soulful child-women? How long can you linger on feet bouncing off sea-soaked mudflats before it becomes a poetic indulgence?
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

Insufferable in almost every way.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

The characters have little substance or development. The dialogue is minimal and deliberately semi-audible.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Arguably Terrence Malick's most Malick-y film to date, at times To The Wonder feels like a Malick parody. Visually, it's absolutely stunning, but the 'story' is abstract even by his standards.
Stephen Carty-Flix Capacitor

Some viewers will find this deep and meaningful; others will leave scratching their heads.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Frankly, a bad Terrence Malick film is better than 90 percent of movies released in cinemas: but if you thought The Tree of Life was indulgent and overly kaleidoscopic, you should avoid this like the plague.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Although beautiful to watch, the film offers very little in the way of coherent plot or character development.
Alex Zane-Sun Online

The fact that there is very little in the way of plot and dialogue means that you spend the best part of two hours looking at pretty pictures.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

At times, the new film plays like a Wayans brothers parody of a late Malick picture: Sleepy Movie, Floaty Movie, Preachy Movie.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

The cloying, bliss-out pantheism that featured in The Tree of Life is virtually the only feature in Malick's new film.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

The movie wants to explore looming crises of faith, but for Malick fans it's in serious danger of entailing one.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

This is cinema sent from the heavens.
David Jenkins-Little White Lies

Affleck is badly miscast and the story fails to engage on an emotional level, with Malick's directorial flourishes coming dangerously close to self-parody.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

In the face of the film's overwhelming visual beauty, no official religious faith is required to feel that you are witnessing paradise gained and lost.
Tom Dawson-The List

Kurylenko is the filmmaker's twirliest female character of all, a Malick Pixie Dream Girl whose own crisis matters as much as that of her male counterpart's.
Simon Reynolds-Digital Spy

100 per cent pure, unadulterated Malick, an absorbing, thoughtful, moving meditation on the things that matter.
-Empire Magazine

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two men-the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey-whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking-ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow. (c) WB. Watch Sun Don't Shine

Written and directed by actress/filmmaker Amy Seimetz (Tiny Furniture, Upstream Color and Pit Stop), Sun Don't Shine follows Crystal (Kate Lyn Sheil) and her boyfriend Leo (Kentucker Audley) on a tense and mysterious road trip through the desolate yet hauntingly beautiful landscape of central Florida. From the outset, the purpose of their journey is unclear, and the motivations behind their heated altercations and shady errands are hazy, but sporadic moments of tenderness illuminate the loving bond between the two that exists underneath their overt tensions. As the couple travels up the Gulf Coast past an endless panorama of mangrove fields, trailer parks, and cookie-cutter housing developments, the disturbing details of their excursion gradually begin to emerge, revealing Crystal's sinister past and the couple's troubling future. Filmed on location in the environs of Seimetz's hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, Sun Don't Shine is a subtly cryptic story driven by the powerful performances of its lead actors and its eerily poetic setting. Review For Sun Don't Shine

Captures the wildly flailing energy and exhausted torpor of grinding frustration as well as the flickering grace of stifled dreams.
Richard Brody-New Yorker

'I gotta take a route that don't make sense,' Leo says, explaining his haphazard getaway plans, and his remark becomes a sort of mission statement for the lost, hapless, maladjusted and not particularly intelligent souls who inhabit this 'mumblenoir.'
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Amy Seimetz' feature debut Sun Don't Shine haunts and thrives.
Chase Whale-Twitch

The sun don't shine but you may find it quite hard to breathe, such is the tension of Amy Seimetz's impressive debut feature, which uses the oppressive, sultry heat of Florida to accentuate the over-bearing atmosphere.
